Dr. Stavros A. Antoniou was born in Athens, Greece.
He received his undergraduate degree in Thessaloniki, Greece and postgraduate clinical and research training in Germany and in Greece.
He holds a PhD in minimally invasive surgery, a Master Degree in Public Health and Health Business Administration and he is Fellow of the European Board of Surgery. His scholarly work is focused on synthesis of evidence (meta-analysis, meta-regression, trial sequential analysis, network meta-analysis) and he has performed extensive research on the quality of scholarly work. He has a track record of over 120 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
He has served as head or member of several guidelines development groups and is associate editor and member of the editorial board of numerous peer-reviewed journals.
He is member of the Research Committee of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES).
He is currently clinical and research fellow at the Department of Surgery at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.

He is Past-President of ISHAWS (Italian Society of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery, the Italian Chapter of European Hernia Society.
Professor Cuccurullo is credited with over 120 publications, including articles, book chapters and textbooks. He has delivered over 500 lectures as invited speaker in national and international congresses/symposia. Has organized as President  the first Italian Consensus Conference on the laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. Has taught and organized 35 editions of biannual courses on advanced laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic full immersion surgical week). He is teacher in the laparoscopic advanced surgery School of Italian Surgery Society, and in the section of laparoscopic parietal wall surgery School of Italian Hospital Surgery Association. Ioannis is working as Consultant General and Emergency Surgeon with Specialist interest in Laparoscopic Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Surgery at Kingston Hospital in London. He is also an Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals and St George’s University Hospital NHS FT.

Teaching is Ioannis’ passion. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery at St George’s University London Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Ioannis is also an active Instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), PreHospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Care of the Critical Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP), Definitive Surgical Trauma Course (DSTC) and Modular Ultrasound ESTES Course (MUSEC). He is the Medical Director of a Life Support Course Agency which organises hybrid Trauma and Military Life Support courses and published two manuals: ‘Emergency Trauma Response’ and ‘Tactical Combat Rescue’.

He participated as a Faculty in 89 International & National courses and as a Medical Director in 15 courses. Ioannis attended 91 congresses and did 95 oral/poster or video presentations.

His passion for Surgical Education led him to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education and continue for the MSc at the University of South Wales.

He is the Educational and Clinical Supervisor of Kingston Hospital’s Surgical Trainees and an Examiner of the Central Recruitment Panel for the National Entry Exams for Core and Higher Surgical Trainees of London Deanery. He is appointed by Kingston Hospital and the Royal College of Surgeons of England as College Tutor for Surgery. He is a Member of the Educational Committee of the European Society of Trauma & Emergency Surgery (ESTES). In 2022 Ioannis was nominated by trainers and trainees for the Faculty of Surgical Trainers Medal for his exceptional contribution to Surgical Training.

Ioannis has been the Clinical Lead in Surgery at Kingston Hospital NHS FT since 2020. He created the Emergency Cholecystectomy Service, one of the top 3 services Nationally, according to the Royal College of Surgeons of England, among the ones that participated in the CholeQuIC-ER project.

Finally, Ioannis is the surgeon who performed the first laparoscopic abdominal wall reconstruction (with e-TEP Rives-Stoppa technique) at Kingston Hospital. His interest in AWR led him to apply and become a member of the Educational Committee of the European Hernia Society (EHS).

After gaining general surgical board certification in 2011 he conducted a clinical Fellowship at the Frimley Park Hospital (Frimley, Surrey, UK) in 2011/2012, where he was trained in colorectal, upper-GI and minimal invasive hernia surgery. My special field of interest is upper GI surgery including advanced laparoscopic hernia surgery. I was trained at Uppsala University Hospital where I also wrote my thesis about inflammatory reactions in peritonitis and malignant obstructive jaundice. Started with laparoscopic hernia surgery in the early 90´s. I have continued to develop the techniques and have been organizing courses and workshops, both in Sweden and abroad. I am a bord member of the Swedish Hernia Register since 2004 and chairman for GallRiks (Swedish Registry for Gallstone Surgery and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) since 2019. Before that I was the treasurer and the chairman of the Swedish Association for Innovative Surgical Technology (SIKT) for ten years. Furthermore, I supervise doctoral students, my ongoing research revolves around hernia surgery, gallbladder- and obesity surgery, mostly based on data from our national registers. Finally, I am responsible for laparoscopic and simulator procedures at our clinic.

He published the world’s first consensus statement on the sportsman’s groin which was a carefully documented rationale for the treatment of patients that present with this potential diagnosis where the agreed new nomenclature was decided on as ‘inguinal disruption’.

My clinical interests are all aspects of coloproctology and specifically colonoscopy, laparoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease.

I trained in medicine at St Mary's Hospital, London and underwent surgical training in both London and Wales. My sub-specialty training in colorectal surgery was obtained in Cardiff, Swansea and St Marks Hospital in London. I received a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England to assess virtual reality training in laparoscopic surgery, and was awarded a Master of Surgery degree for my work.
